Our Story
JEMS Mount Hermon was born out of resilience and faith. In June 1950, a group of Japanese-American pastors gathered in Northern California to establish the first Nisei Christian Youth Conference at Mount Hermon — a response to the spiritual and communal needs of a generation rebuilding after World War II. From that single gathering, a movement grew.
Just months later, in January 1951, those same pastors formally founded the Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society (JEMS), giving the ministry an organizational home and a missional vision. Over the decades, what began as a youth camp for Japanese-Americans expanded to embrace all Asian-Americans across multiple generations. Today, JEMS Mount Hermon serves over 1,500 people annually through these divisions — Family/Main camp, Nichigo camp, Jr. High, Inter High, Sr. High, College, and Special Camps.
